Fostering Community and Peace: PEACEPLUS Supports the Shannonside Recreational Campus
The Shannonside Recreational Campus (SRC) represents a bold vision for community enrichment and connection in the Upper Shannonside region.
It is set to become a transformative cornerstone for the region, delivering world-class sports and recreational facilities that will benefit generations to come. Central to this vision is the Shannonside Peace Arena, a state-of-the-art indoor pavilion that will serve as a beacon of community connection, inclusivity, and opportunity.
The Shannonside Peace Arena will provide much-needed indoor facilities, including multi-sport courts for basketball, indoor training spaces, high performance gym and community meeting areas. Its versatility will ensure year-round use, regardless of weather, making it a hub for a wide range of activities, from local club training and regional competitions to wellness programmes and community events. This vital indoor space will also foster cross-community collaboration and inclusivity, underscoring its mission to bring people together, as reflected in its name.
This landmark project is made possible through the generous support of the PEACEPLUS Programme, which has allocated €15.3 million in funding. Administered by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), PEACEPLUS is co-funded by the European Union, the Governments of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, and the Irish Government. The programme seeks to promote peace, stability, and prosperity by supporting initiatives that bring communities together and address the legacy of conflict.
The PEACEPLUS Programme’s investment in the Shannonside Peace Arena reflects its commitment to building peaceful, thriving, and inclusive communities. This funding not only brings to life a long-standing community vision but also ensures that the region has a world-class facility that will serve as a hub for recreation, sports, and connection for generations to come.
